What is the Difference Between Sensor and Transducer?

Some individuals may use interchangeably the physical equipment, sensors and transducers. These instruments are used in countless gadgets and equipment, both electrical and electronic. But the distinction between the sensor and the transducer is not made by individuals. Because sometimes transducers are discovered in sensors. The primary distinction between the sensor and the transducer is that the sensor is a physical device that senses a physical quantity and then transforms it into signals that an instrument or the user can read. The transducer is also a physical tool, one type of energy being converted into another form. A transducer's best instance is an antenna. Because electricity is converted into electromagnetic waves. Also, a sensor converts one type of energy into another, implies it senses a physical quantity and transforms it into an electrical signal.

What is a Sensor and Transducer?

The sensor is a tool that senses a physical quantity and transforms it into an analog amount that can be electrically measured such as voltage, capacitance, inductance and ohmic strength. The system developer must operate, interface and regulate the output.

There are numerous types of sensors available that are used in separate apps. The motion sensor is one sort of sensor that is used in countless devices such as home security lights, automatic door fixtures usually send out some sort of energy such as ultrasonic waves, microwaves or light beams, and senses when the flow of energy is disrupted by something entering its lane.

The transducer is a sensor-connected device to convert the quantity measured into a standard electrical signal such as 0-10V DC, -10 to + 10V DC, 4 to 20mA, 0 to 20mA, 0-25mA etc. The system developer can use the transducer's o / p straight.

In electronic communication schemes, transducers are used to transform signals of distinct physical types into electronic signals. Two transducers are used in the figure below, where the microphone is used as the first transducer and the second transducer speaker.

There are different kinds of sensors available and transducers to choose from such as analog, digital, input and output. The type of transducer I / p or o / p used depends on the type of signal that is sensed or regulated. But, as they convert one physical quantity to another, a sensor and transducer can be described.

A device that conducts an I / p function is called a sensor because it senses a physical shift in some characteristics that changes in reaction to some excitation. Transducer is also a device that converts energy from one type to another.

Common Sensors and Transducers

Applications of Sensors and Transducers

Applications of sensors and transducers mainly involves in various electronics and electrical projects.

Programmable Digital Temperature Controller

This project is an electronic project based on Edgefxkits ' integrated systems. The primary purpose of this project is to regulate the temperature of any device used in industrial applications.

To show the temperature measurements, the LCD display is interfaced with the microcontroller. The digital temperature sensor gives the 8051 microcontroller 9-bit temperature measurements. The EEPROM non-volatile memory is used through a set of switches to the microcontroller to store user-defined temperature settings. The microcontroller is linked to a relay that can be driven by the transistor driver. Use this relay to drive the load.

Touch Controlled Load Switch

To regulate the load, the touch controlled load switch is intended and a piezoelectric plate is used as a transducer in this project. This project is made up of a power supply, touch sensor plate, 555 timer, touch plate, relay and charge.

This project utilizes a monostable 555 timer, which is used to create a relay to switch ON a load over a set time duration.555 timer involves a triggered pin linked to the touch plate. It provides high logic for a set time period when 555 timer is enabled by contact. Changing the RC time limit attached to the timer can vary this time interval. Thus, the timer's o / p drives the relay load. The load turns off automatically after a set length of moment.
